Twice a year the rising sun pierces the temple of Ramesses II to illuminate the gods in the inner sanctuary — a feat of ancient engineering, celebrated at dawn.
On February 22 and October 22 each year, the first light of morning travels 60 metres into the Great Temple of Abu Simbel to light the seated statues of Ra-Horakhty, Ramesses II, and Amun — leaving only Ptah, god of darkness, in shadow. Crowds gather before dawn for music, dancing, and the moment of alignment. We can position you at the temple for sunrise and pair it with a wider Aswan and Lake Nasser itinerary.
